An Artist Working with AI

Sleep #44 Outpainted

This started as an original watercolor drawing of a sleeping figure. DALLE was used in the outpainting. As the creator of the original, I can clearly see in some places where my lines and brushwork stop and DALLE starts, MOST of the time. But there are places in this work, where DALLE did well. In particular, the blue wash if the background is convincing as is the extension of the bed frame with the quality of the line and shadow rendering. In the bottom right corner, an object has been rendered somewhat convincingly although the value does not match the atmospheric quality of the original work.

The red boxes show where DALLE has convincingly outpainted. The green box shows an added object that would be convincing if the values matched the original.

For reference, I have provided the original.

The Original Art, Sleep #44

Coming from a background with a formal training in studio art in painting, I see AI art as just that, artificially created art. And AI is a tool, like a brush, helping in being creative, and not eventually making human creativity obsolete. This tool that we now have takes a skill to use, including prompt engineering. An artist can use this tool to create something that is engaging, truly innovative, and has a message.

And whether purely artificial generative art has value or not, and even considered art, is decided by the market, critic, or viewer. If someone can’t handle it, then they’re weak in their own imagination currently lacking the ability to create. Everyone has the potential to learn, and this is a challenge, not a threat. An opportunity to express what is really human.
